Interlude.

The Earwing, Otopteryx volitans, is one of a number of now-extinct mammals native to the Hy-yi-yi Archipelago in the Pacific. Isolated since the Late Cretaceous, the Hi-yi-yi Islands developed a number of endemic mammals that evolved very strange noses. Of these "Snouters", the Rhinogrades were amongst the oddest. Many species had evolved their noses into one or more "legs", their traditional hind legs often atrophying and their forelegs turning to grooming and grasping instead of locomotion.

One of these strange creatures was the earwing, a Snouter capable of limited flight using its ears once it had launched itself into the air with its nose. Their fur was very colorful, coming in a variety of colors. Because they tend to jump and fly hindquarters first, this one is fleeing away from the viewer.

Alas, the Hi-yi-yi Islands sank beneath the waves thanks to distant nuclear testing, accidentally wiping out this weird branch of the mammal family tree.

Ah, the ever reliable Cape ground squirrel and its relatives. Off the top of my head, I can think of only two: X-rating Xerus of Sweet Pickles and Saint Ungo.

W is for Warbler. The biggest, baddest, and rough an' toughenist of New World Warblers, the Texas warbler enjoys light afternoon snacks of tarantulas, bats, and small snakes.

Could use some blacks for contrasts, but I've worked on this for too long tonight. The Texas warbler comes from Ben, Cathryn, and John Sill's parody book A Field Guide to Little-Known & Seldom-Seen Birds of North America. Because you just know I've got to layer gags on occasion.

Garden parties aren't Amethyst's normal habitat, but this time, she's game to give it a go. She's not wearing any flowers because I haven't figured out which ones she ought to wear. I'm not even sure she has a favorite flower.

What I really wanted to draw for #23. The new pens helped a lot. Picture inspired by Sandy Schreiber's Garden Party Girls.

They say the sea witches of Harrias Slough dissolve into water when they die. That's balderdash. They only dissolve into water when they're bored.

As I promised way back on 1, it's time to scrabble for ideas. Today's just wouldn't gel into anything, so I ended up just drawing a dripping otter.

U is for Unicorn. The classic type of Europe, that is, not the rhinos of yesteryear. And they still aren't horses.

I finally drew the transgendered unicorn two-spirit I've been noodling out for a while. He or maybe she doesn't like her or perhaps his body. He or she thinks it's lying, so is uncertain if he's a she or if she's really a he. Even at 32, it can get her or him crying in self-loathing and frustration. As much as we might wish otherwise, some people can't help but be emotional messes.

R is for Rabbit. Unmindful of the fact that her "pirate" accent is pure Hollywood invention, she battles for Christmas presents. Ahoy, mate!

Some drawings fall together beautifully, each line and concept popping into place as if it had always been there but just needed to be traced over to be seen. Then there's drawings that simply go "thud" no matter how much you work at them. This is one that simply isn't working for me, but since I needed an Inktober picture, ended up as something to practice with anyway. On the bright side, at least now I have an idea what my Holiday card might be for this year.

Q is for Questing Beast. Possibly a now-extinct relict creodont, Bestialatrat pellinorii was a curious creature described with a snake's head, a leopard's body, a lion's haunches, a hart's hoofed feet, and a white coat. Its alternate name, the Beast Glatisant or Barking Beast, comes from sounds from its belly alleged to resemble the yapping of small dogs or foxes. The type specimen appeared in Arthurian legend accompanied by the allegorical editorializing typical of medieval literature, turning it into a symbol of incest, violence, and chaos that would eventually bring down King Arthur's reign.

My interpretation of the Questing Beast from Arthurian Legend, as seen by King Arthur and pursued by King Pellinore and Sirs Palamedes and Percival. Some speculative animal artists on DeviantArt have reinterpreted various legendary beasts as if they might have been real animals whose appearance and behavior had been distorted and misinterpreted by the less scientifically rigorous scholars of the past.

P is for Pfrit. One of the dinkiest of mammals, the pfrit, Aquambulus hirsutus, can walk on water thanks to its light weight and whiskery paws and feet. A terror to mosquito descendents when it stabs its mouth into their larva to suck them dry, it's a boon to wetlands of Eurasia-America 50 millions years in the future.

Perhaps inspired by the artists on DeviantArt who speculate on what future animals might look like, I bring you the pfrit, originally dreamed up by Dougal Dixon in his 1981 book After Man.

Opossums always remind me of Muppets, especially their heads. So this one (incidentally inspired by Zenirix) ends up singing and dancing to a song that was originally in an Italian softcore porn film before it caught on internationally and became a Muppet staple.

Also, I should stop procrastinating so much each day.

N is for Nutria. Nosy Nutria just can't seem to keep her nose out of everyone else's business.

I imagine this is something you don't see everyday: a Sweet Pickles fan character. Sweet Pickles were a series of twenty-six childrens' books from the 70s to the 90s, each featuring one of twenty-six anthro characters, plus an additional fourteen books, a bus book holder, and a series of promos with Avon. Each character had his or her own characteristic personality trait that, during the course of their book, often got them into a little pickle.

L is for Leptictidium. The gals are flirty, skimpy dressers, and perhaps over-friendly when they're in the mood. The guys are not.
