Desert Rose
Desert Rose by @Claidis (Lauren Rankin)

A painting based on Sting - Desert Rose. I was going to add the running horse in there but, ran out of room. Ah yes, and it's also my first legitimate painting! Yay for me.

You really have no idea how displeased I am that I couldn't get this scanned and that I don't have access to any quality cameras....smacks forehead Anyway, this is FAR BETTER in person. I had to take this with my boyfriend's crappy digicam, so that's why it's awful on here. It took several evenings to finish this---probably around 15-18 hours to paint. I really am not sure, I lose track of time. Acrylic on 16" x 20" canvas.

I did a picture a while ago based on "Desert Rose" as well and it's remarkable what similarities, and what differences, there are between yours and mine. It's interesting to see what kind of imagery this song in particular, but any song, can evoke in different people. Yours is a lot earthier than mine and has more contrast in the shading, which I think help brings it to life a lot more than mine. I love the way you painted the flowers and dunes in particular and the woman's outfit is nicely done as well. I also really like the darkening sky off to the left there. That gives the picture a nice eerie effect. I'm not getting much of a sense of movement in her pose, but that might not necessarily be what you were going for, so I won't say it's a flaw. It's a lovely picture regardless. Nice work.

Looking at your picture, I can definately see the influence from the song.

The colours you've chosen for the piece is wonderfully rich and vibrant, against the desert background, and in many ways reminds me of one of my tarot cards.

A truely beautiful piece.
