|[Part 1] [Part 2] [Part 3]|
Upon Red Heaven's insistence, Nova found herself in her favorite lounge, which was named after its masked matron. The old lady usually left the stage to her youthful staff, but tonight, well, it seemed like she just found purpose again. I suppose that sort of thing happens when one narrowly escapes death, perhaps moreso when one is rescued. Red Heaven had some secrets, no doubt, but Nova wasn't interested in them; when she heard that her favorite bartender went missing, it became Nova's sole purpose to find her and bring her home safely. Oh, what an adventure that was.. perhaps a story for another time. The green weasel would hear nothing of payment, but Red made her promise to come in later that evening for a free drink.
When she got there, she was greeted by Red's son manning the bar, who placed a fizzing, fragrant shot glass in front of her before she could ask for her usual. Nova wasn't the fruity flowery sort, but there was something about that shot that was calling to her. The scent..? What was that? There was something maddeningly familiar about it, something that she could not place by scent alone -- and for her, that was odd. Her sense of smell and mental library of fragrances were a fair rival for the most experienced hounds. She dipped a fingertip in and, satisfied to note that her nail hadn't changed color, brought it to her lips and nose, feeling overwhelmed not by alcohol but by emotions.
"What's in this, mate? I don't see it on the menu," she asked the lad who was running the show. They had met briefly a few times before; his name was Toddy and he was a year or two younger than herself. Polite, but always seemed busy, and never hung around long.
"I don't even know, No'," he said, "Mom laid some ingredients out and told me how to put them together, then went to get dolled up for her song. Thanks again for saving her. You know she'll never accept your money again, right?"
"That almost sounds ominous, mate. Still, I've been poisoned more times than I can remember, and I'm not getting any bad vibes here, so I guess I'll have to take that a gesture of friendship. All the same, I can't shake the feeling that you're ma is trying to get me drunk or something. I swear, this shot-"
"Oh! Butterfly Kisses, that's what she called it."
"Butterfly.. oh, she would call it that. Well, whatever it is, it's.. it's appreciated. Cheers, mate."
Nova felt tempted to down the entire drink quickly, but told herself that it had to be savored. Behind her, Red Heaven's dramatic flames began lighting up her small stage, and the low, sweet, wordless noises began building into a song. Nova spun around on her stool to watch the lady in the butterfly mask do her magic amid the gold and fiery props. Funny, the place seemed empty tonight. It was pretty dark until now and she hadn't noticed, but it was now apparent that the actress, the barkeep, and the huntress were the only ones present. That would explain why Red Heaven seemed to be looking directly at her.
