Of course she stayed out of trouble, had a fun week with her pals on the mainland, and prepared to go to her island hideaway. No nasty surprises, no big fights, no untimely arrests.

Since he was headed that direction anyway, Nova caught a ride on Rip's boat. All of their real work was done, and they only had to worry about avoiding the occasional rock field or marauder's ship. Smooth sailing. In a few days, they would be near her territory and she would glide the distance to her island. The big boat wasn't designed in a way that it could safely get any closer, and the island wasn't designed in a way that was welcoming; perfect for privacy.

One sunny morning, the pair were sitting at the bow. Rip was reading a surgical manual that Nova had given to him on his birthday, and Nova was occupying herself with her own plans. She couldn't wait to get back to her turf and start building and repairing things.

Her thoughts were interrupted when the cat spoke up..

[The Request]

Early in their partnership, Nova admitted that she did have one fear. She was terrified of winding up in a situation out of her control that would result in her becoming pregnant. Since Ripper was a surgeon (formerly, anyway; but he still practiced for fun), she asked if he could remove that fear. At the time, he wasn't interested in helping, because he wasn't interested in her personal problems. But, as they worked together, and she moved up from being a puppet to a partner, he revisited the thought. Rip decided that, if her fear ever came true, everything they had would fall apart; she'd be useless, and it would be a massive investment to recruit and train a new partner.
