Simple jobs sometimes got out of hand. They could become more trouble than they were worth. Nova couldn't blame her bounties for not wanting to cooperate; heck, she had done worse things to her own antagonists in the past. Scrapes and bruises were part of the gig; you'd get used to them, learn how to deal with them on your own. Unless your fixin' arm ever got mauled, then you'd have to seek out someone else to deal with it. Luckily, the police station and the hospital were on the same block, so after she cashed in her latest catch, she took that short stroll to find her fixer.
After a life of living on her own and doing things her own way, she had mild anxiety about being around medical buildings or procedures. But, this wasn't so bad. The place was modern, bustling. Not overcrowded. Not spooky. Big windows, nice plants, a coffee shop that smelled awesome. She checked in, and only had to wait a few short minutes before being taken into a small office. The nurse was exceptionally chipper, which did seem a little bit forced, but as time passed, it felt like that was probably her nature. Very friendly, gentle, and thorough. She asked a lot of questions, not just about the situation that brought Nova in today, but about her life in general. The nurse must've been great with kids, she knew how to put her patients at ease. She knew how to flatter. The weasel lost track of how many times she was called "brave" and "exciting" in such a short time. A little praise was delicious, and it did help to numb the sting of her wounds. This lady -- Head Nurse Juglans -- seemed like the kind of person she'd want to be friends with, if she would ever allow herself to have friends. She was so easy to talk to.
Though it was a painful injury, the news was good. There were no breaks or any major damage, aside from a slight infection. She would be given medicine for that. Nova agreed to take a few weeks of downtime. No riding, no shooting, no fighting. She had some reading to do, anyway. Nurse Juglans approved of this safer hobby, but she did ask a question that hurt a little. "What do your parents think about this bounty hunting career?" Her parents.. that was a sore subject. She tried to answer honestly, without letting her emotions spill out. That old balancing game.
"I like to think that they would be proud of me, but I ride alone. I've been on my own since pretty much forever." She didn't want to talk about this. However, she felt the thoughts filling her mouth, threatening to burst out. This wasn't the time or the place for a tragic backstory. She didn't want to make things awkward in front of the nurse. She just wanted to wrap things up and head to her hideout.
Nurse Juglans didn't pick up the cue. "Is it alright if I ask why that is? You don't have to tell me if it makes you uncomfortable, I just find your life so fascinating! I want to know everything about you."
Oh well. "It's a long story, and it's not a pretty one. I don't suppose you've ever heard of Sevin Cabro?"
The red squirrel's tone became less playful. She sounded sad. "Oh my, I'm sorry to say that I have. Not just as a nurse piecing my patients back together, but.. well.."
"..personally? Because for me, it's personal."
"Personally, for me, too. I've got a score to settle with Sevin Cabro."
