This is my vampire Sheila design, for when in my fan comic/Manga she gets turned into a vampire, or more accurately, a half vampire, she is not a full vampire, due to certain reasons which I will leave for the issue when it happens.

Due to her circumstances, she has only certain vampire traits, the most obvious it the need to consume blood from living creatures, however this is only a necessity, she does not have an overbearing thirst, it is merely to appease her vampire side, she still has to eat food like a regular human, but her bite will not produce another vampire. She does not have heightened hearing, nor smell, she does have some enhanced vision and alertness though, her strength is also increased, along with her speed and agility, but she cannot scales walls like some spider, also she heals much faster and is immune to poisons. Her personality has also been affected, she is more confident and assertive, though she is not overconfident and she is now more physical in her approach to life, cherishes every moment. She also has no issues with any religious symbols and other methods of inflicting harm on or repelling a vampire, this is again due to her still being alive... and technically still human. Lastly, while she has now got tougher skin and heals faster, she is still susceptible to extreme strikes, however if she can consume enough blood in that situation, she will be able to heal and recover from her wounds as long as they are not too severe!

So, that is the new vampire Sheila, look forward to the issue where she appears, issue 20, Blood Ties! However the above version will only be from issue 24, the Dead of Night!

Interlude.

The Earwing, Otopteryx volitans, is one of a number of now-extinct mammals native to the Hy-yi-yi Archipelago in the Pacific. Isolated since the Late Cretaceous, the Hi-yi-yi Islands developed a number of endemic mammals that evolved very strange noses. Of these "Snouters", the Rhinogrades were amongst the oddest. Many species had evolved their noses into one or more "legs", their traditional hind legs often atrophying and their forelegs turning to grooming and grasping instead of locomotion.

One of these strange creatures was the earwing, a Snouter capable of limited flight using its ears once it had launched itself into the air with its nose. Their fur was very colorful, coming in a variety of colors. Because they tend to jump and fly hindquarters first, this one is fleeing away from the viewer.

Alas, the Hi-yi-yi Islands sank beneath the waves thanks to distant nuclear testing, accidentally wiping out this weird branch of the mammal family tree.

W is for Warbler. The biggest, baddest, and rough an' toughenist of New World Warblers, the Texas warbler enjoys light afternoon snacks of tarantulas, bats, and small snakes.

Could use some blacks for contrasts, but I've worked on this for too long tonight. The Texas warbler comes from Ben, Cathryn, and John Sill's parody book A Field Guide to Little-Known & Seldom-Seen Birds of North America. Because you just know I've got to layer gags on occasion.

U is for Unicorn. The classic type of Europe, that is, not the rhinos of yesteryear. And they still aren't horses.

I finally drew the transgendered unicorn two-spirit I've been noodling out for a while. He or maybe she doesn't like her or perhaps his body. He or she thinks it's lying, so is uncertain if he's a she or if she's really a he. Even at 32, it can get her or him crying in self-loathing and frustration. As much as we might wish otherwise, some people can't help but be emotional messes.

R is for Rabbit. Unmindful of the fact that her "pirate" accent is pure Hollywood invention, she battles for Christmas presents. Ahoy, mate!

Some drawings fall together beautifully, each line and concept popping into place as if it had always been there but just needed to be traced over to be seen. Then there's drawings that simply go "thud" no matter how much you work at them. This is one that simply isn't working for me, but since I needed an Inktober picture, ended up as something to practice with anyway. On the bright side, at least now I have an idea what my Holiday card might be for this year.

Q is for Questing Beast. Possibly a now-extinct relict creodont, Bestialatrat pellinorii was a curious creature described with a snake's head, a leopard's body, a lion's haunches, a hart's hoofed feet, and a white coat. Its alternate name, the Beast Glatisant or Barking Beast, comes from sounds from its belly alleged to resemble the yapping of small dogs or foxes. The type specimen appeared in Arthurian legend accompanied by the allegorical editorializing typical of medieval literature, turning it into a symbol of incest, violence, and chaos that would eventually bring down King Arthur's reign.

My interpretation of the Questing Beast from Arthurian Legend, as seen by King Arthur and pursued by King Pellinore and Sirs Palamedes and Percival. Some speculative animal artists on DeviantArt have reinterpreted various legendary beasts as if they might have been real animals whose appearance and behavior had been distorted and misinterpreted by the less scientifically rigorous scholars of the past.

P is for Pfrit. One of the dinkiest of mammals, the pfrit, Aquambulus hirsutus, can walk on water thanks to its light weight and whiskery paws and feet. A terror to mosquito descendents when it stabs its mouth into their larva to suck them dry, it's a boon to wetlands of Eurasia-America 50 millions years in the future.

Perhaps inspired by the artists on DeviantArt who speculate on what future animals might look like, I bring you the pfrit, originally dreamed up by Dougal Dixon in his 1981 book After Man.

N is for Nutria. Nosy Nutria just can't seem to keep her nose out of everyone else's business.

I imagine this is something you don't see everyday: a Sweet Pickles fan character. Sweet Pickles were a series of twenty-six childrens' books from the 70s to the 90s, each featuring one of twenty-six anthro characters, plus an additional fourteen books, a bus book holder, and a series of promos with Avon. Each character had his or her own characteristic personality trait that, during the course of their book, often got them into a little pickle.

According to medieval bestiaries, the ichneumon or Egyptian mongoose was one of the few creatures that were immune to being stoned by a cockatrice's deadly gaze. However, they didn't usually wear hats or carry firearms.

Also, look! Liberties probably taken with the mongoose and wild ones definitely taken for the rifle. You just try finding references for mongoose-sized hunting rifles at the drop of a hat.

G is for Gump. Ozalces lasciva, better known as the gump, is a deer native to the Land of Oz. Somewhat resembling a cross between an elk and a moose with mostly green fur as well as a saucy, upturned nose, the best known gump is a trophy head hanging in the Emerald City palace, brought back to life by Princess Ozma (at the time enchanted as a boy called Tip) using some magic powder. Originally the figurehead to a lashup of a flying couch, the gump found this too embarrassing and eventually insisting on returning to a trophy hanging on the wall, where it would later annoy Dorothy when it tried talking to her.

A picture inspired by Emmet Earwax's Casper the Friendly Ghost/Oz crossover, whereupon, alarmed at foul magics causing everyone else in the palace to fall asleep, the gump attempted to pull itself off the wall and in a trice, extruded a whole new body for itself. It then proceeded to race out of the Emerald City and head south towards the Good Witch Glenda's kingdom, but grew tired partway and had to stop and rest. I don't think this is quite what he intended, but I saw the gump as the trophy head on a ghostly body (not unlike that of Nightmare, the Galloping Ghost's). Having not had a body for quite a while, it grew tired mentally trying to remember how to run once the immediate shock of getting a new body had worn off.

E is for Elasmotherum. That most cranky, cranky of unicorns. Good luck poaching that horn.

Here's a prehistoric critter in something resembling Mickey Mouse comic artist Floyd Gottfredson's style from the '30s. I guess it's one of my favorite cartoon styles even if I still need practice with it. Also, isn't it strange that I haven't done any anthros yet this Inktober? :-o

D is for Drashig. Extremely omnivorous, they'll eat your landing party and the shuttlecraft, too.

I thought I'd give an alien monster a try tonight. At least it doesn't look too puppet-like. Drashigs featured in the classic Doctor Who episode "Carnival of Monsters".

C is for Cockatrice. The cockatrice is such a bizarre beast. Born of a rooster mother and a toad father, it spends its days alone and unloved. Alas for it, but happily for us, it'll find no henatices to make chickatrices with.

Imagine my surprise when, while looking up a cockatrice, I saw it looked just like a chicken-style bird dragon. Go figure. I also probably should have put those wings up instead of down.

B is for Bongo. Methinks something's wrong-o with this bongo.

I think this one was influenced by Willem van der Merwe's excellent animal portraits, although his animals generally don't tend to wear Groucho glasses.

A is for Auk, but the great ones are extinct, which makes things a bit auk-ward.

Inspired by Heather Bruton's bird dragons, a great auk stares at a noisy great aukdragon. James Audubon's painting of the great auk was a big help.

It's a rather ambitious start to Inktober 2017. Don't worry. I'm sure I'll be scrabbling for simple ideas to quickly scribble out soon enough.

Ah it's spring, the flowers are blooming, and it is St. Patrick's day!
It appears Cream The Rabbit and her buddy Cheese the Chao have found an green chao egg, and all the while there be little wee green chao creatures hiding golden chao eggs around.

I'm real happy of how this turned out, it's cheerful and spring-like.

Happy St. Patrick's day! Enjoy!
