Driving's a lot like riding a bike: It takes practice to find your balance, but once you do, pedaling becomes second nature. Look to where you want to go; check your mirrors every few seconds even if the road was bare a moment ago; and remember the more space you leave to the car ahead, the more time you have to react.
It's not necessarily accurate, but my coach made a comment that's stuck with me: "Assume every other driver is an idiot, and you'll leave yourself a safe margin for error."
