The quote isn't quite from the same point of the story as the pic (And it was Tien who responded rather than Piccolo) but it fits the mood quite nicely.

Mainly an experiment in making effective looking ki affects--without photoshop. The lense flares were just an afterthought, really. The effects for Piccolo look pretty weak, but I do like the way Seventeen's hand came out. 'Course I'd change the colors if I ever tried it again. And while his other arm turned out kind of cool, it needs more detail to really pull off the 'damaged' look. And sadly, this is the only pic of the series where I really nailed the character design for Piccolo. Those arm pads are harder to get right than you'd think.

...I do love the expressions, though...
