Coloured pencils can actually be a great medium to work with, but it will take some practice, and probably some extra cash to purchase a good set of them.

One of the best ways to get great, vibrant colours is by layering the colours. Try starting out with a base colour, and work on that, adding little details and shading as you go on; when shading, try using contrasting colours. It can be a very time consuming process, but don't get impatient with it. Also try to keep the pencil tip pretty sharp for more details.

This picture has a lot of potential. The anatomy and proportions look good, and there's definitely a nice start for coloured pencils in the goldish parts of his hair. Good work; keep it up. :)
