Fiery Knight Rayearth
Fiery Knight Rayearth by @kidkourage (KidK Mirai)

^.^ I drew Bast as a Sailor Scout, and recently my dearest daughter AF and I were extolling the virtues of Hikaru Shidou of Magic Knight Rayearth (one of THE most awesome shoujo anime I have ever seen o_o) and so...this! ^-^;; Apparently I have a blast drawing mah homegirls as anime/manga heroines. So, this is AF in the outfit and with the weapons of that Magic Knight of fire, Hikaru. u.u Who is, obviously, the best of the Knights because she is short, cute, and energetic...and can blast people to kingdom come with her firepower. Me an' daughter loveses da Hikaru-chan, we does.

Unlike with Sailor Bast, I didn't modify the clothes at all cuz I honestly felt I didn't have to! =D;; I mean, Hikaru's already in red...and black's really the only color that fits that outfit's skirt... But while I may not have been very creative with the actual colors of the coloring, I...tried something different with the coloring technique itself! ^.^; Instead of adding more layers for different stuff, like most people would do, I...eliminated all layers except for background, line, color, and 'shinies!' That's right, folks! No shading layer on this piece of work! Not at all! All shading was done entirely through the magic of dodge and burn, which...I seem to be better at than the grey shading on a different layer stuff. I'unno, I like how it came out... Don't know if I'll do it that way from now on, or if it'll only apply to these anime-hybrid style things (though I mostly used a ton of dodge and burn for shading on that last pic, of Red-kun, too...). 9.9; Lemme know if you like or if it's not a good idea.

AF and Hikaru--both short, both cute, both into wearing red, both with the power of fire, and both...eventually, attached to men who've got at least a foot and a half on them, height-wise. =B Revel in the wonder of the mighty sword that was, actually, the inspiration for Red's much simpler Mighty Sword. Bet you didn't know that, did you?

Ooh, the fire came out really good. o.o It looks awesome. I love the sweepy hair and action-y pose too.

My experience with dodge and burn hasn't been very good simply because you cannot plan it; it shades and highlights what it wants to do. It can be very useful on black but that's the only place I ever use it anymore. The suggestion that was given to me that took me away from dodge and burn was triple shading layers.. one for just black (the grey you spoke of, which I usually put at a higher opacity), a complement color to the light source, and a darker color of the starting color. I don't usually use the third one, cuz I'm lazy :B; And to me it looks fine with just two shading layers.. generally.. bwah... my lack of using photoshop has made my brain go haywire. o.o; Or at least forget half the.. stuff... oh well :D This pic looks good, anyway, I like the reflection of the fire on the sword, too.

It's true, yes, that you can't predict what dodge and burn will do...if I mess with the coloring with that and then I don't like it, I just recolor that part with the original color. 9.9; Takes time, but I'm willing to do it. I've found that I like what it does on black, yes, and red. o.o; O'course, both the pics that I used it excessively on consisted mostly of black and red anyway, so...9.9; Ahahahahaha... The compliment to the light source color thing, I think sounds good, but it's another of those theory things that I don't quite understand. The one time I tried with the shading with purple in a yellow light source...well, it looked like her legs were purple! =D;; I think I just don't know how to do it right--on your pics, that you've used such a thing on, it's unnoticeable that that's what you did simply because it looks so natural. As for the darker color of the original layer thingy...that sounds a lot like what I do with colored pencils. o.o Hm. Maybe I should try that out on something, next. Hey, thanks for the idea! =D
