Fernald tried to be a good Christian boy and resist the gay urges, but he couldn't, as his feelings he developed for "Christy" refused to go away even after learning "she" was actually male. He's still in love with "her." Even when he learned his crossdressing lover is the star performer at a very devilish night club called the Satanic Panic, he had to go and see him dance. And he wasn't disappointed. He feels very, very naughty, but he is not disappointed.
