Mariko is very lonely in life. She moves about a lot, as her father's job requires them to move atleast once a month. She prays to god for a friend she can have forever. While petting her cat, she wishes for a friend like him. As she turns out the lights to leave the room, her cat grows into a human being...not only that, but a naked one. A handsome one, too! She promptly blushed and screams. Neko looks around sheepishly. It turns out (obviously) that Neko has become human. Mariko must go through the troubles of hiding him from her father when he returns home from a small trip the next day. She explains to him that he is a homeless boy and that as part of her school exchange student program, she must take care of him. Through the month, he stays with Mariko. All though he doesn't talk much, he falls in love with her (of course). When it comes time to move, he tells Mariko that he has feelings for her. When he finally kisses her, he is turned back into a cat because he violated his promise to God. ( When Mariko asked for a friend, God asked the cat's spirit if it would be willing, and it said yes. ) Mariko cries and Neko bounds away. Sleeping that night, Neko's spirit visits and tells her what happened. The final scene shows Mariko wishing to God for a perfect love who can stay with her always, and stoking the cat neko with a smiling face.
