Water Sprite
Water Sprite by @Claidis (Lauren Rankin)

I got the pose idea for this off of the painting on the cover of Mercedes Lackey's novel, "Spirits White as Lightning". Invention from there! I've been told the background of green doesn't really fit well with her. What do you think?

This is lovely! Your coloring is wonderful. I especially adore her skin; so many colors mixed into one shade. Her face is attractive an your style's nice and original. I also love the water, it seems to be holding her up. The water lillies add such a nice pond feel to it.

The green in the background definitely fits. I usually don't like completely monotone pictures...if you had added in a boring old blue sky with fluffy clouds I would've have liked this so much. It looks like moss. :) Beautiful job!

Thank you! I do try to spend lots of attention to coloring, since it adds such depth to an image if it's shaded. I'm glad you liked the face! Your faces are expert, so I appreciate it.

Also good that the water lilies helped. They were a bit of a pain, and I couldn't get the glow around them right, but it seemed so much better than just blank water. And definitely a good thing for full-color! Monotone is good sometimes, but too much gets boring. Thank you for commenting!

Very, very nice picture. I love her clothes, and the water is just gorgeous. I don't see how the background doesn't fit, it looks fine to me. Very good job.

This is a great picture! I tottaly love her pose and the entire composition is beautifully aranged. Did you use a misture of computer graphics and color pencils to do this, or something else? I love how her face looks, especially the eyes, it gives her a certain facial expression, but I can't place exactly a name for it, almost like that feeling that at least I can't particularly name. I love what you did with her wings, really pretty, and it's a unique idea to have a water sprite with faery wings. Her outfit reminds me of anciet Egypt, so would it be tottaly wrong for me to assume that she is coming out of the Nyle? By the way, i don't think that the background doesn't fit, I think it fits perfectly because if you would have done it blue or something like that your sprite would not have stood out so brilliantly from the background and it would have taken away greately from the impact of the picture. The coloring on this picture is totally amazing, the transparancy of her clothes is very well shown and the way you did the waves is remarcable. it does look like the water is holding her up, but it doesn't look unnatural at all, the water doesn't look stiff or static, on the contrary, it seems to almost show the motion of how the wave mooves with all the foam and droplets. Absolutely amazing job!

Thank you! I was a bit troubled on the composition and the background issue, but you put the worries to rest! No digital media on this one though; it's prismacolor pencils and markers, and some regular old sharpie markers for outlining [I haven't aquired all these fancy "sakura" or "micron" pens everyone likes to yak about. I'm conventional!]

Her face did give me a lot of trouble, and for a while I didn't even like it. But I fixed it up a bit, or tried to---with my white prismacolor pencil. Those are lifesavers, heh. The eyes are intended to give off a feeling of otherworldly knowledge and origin.

I'm not too clear on what defines water sprites from fairies and other mystical beings, despite my love of fantasy. I put wings on all of them and just say "screw it", ha. Wings have always been my favorite to play with, since there are so many infinite combinations and styles for them. The collar did come out ancient egyptian, but it wasn't really intentional at first. Did have a nice effect though! I'm not sure if she's in the Nile, but it's entirely possible. Thank you for the comments!
