(I"m not very verbose today; that's why I sound like a caveman)
The shoes look kinda squishy near the bottom, don't they? His hair, the shine--it goes straight up and down. But clearly, his hair sweeps to the right of the pic. Shouldn't the shine (which comes from light hitting the individual strands) sweep right, as well? He has a bit of a mop head--dunno if that's intentional, it's just what I see. Have you ever tried highlighting dark hair with a bluish or golden light? It's fun. Adds life. I'm not getting those...kneepads? Chunky brown things by his shoes. Remind me of Milo Thatch pants. I (heart) Milo Thatch. The pads look squishy, too. Gunblade look heavy to hold in one small hand like that.

Your shading experiment = good. Yes. Might want to doublecheck your lightsource (one shadow on the far jacket lapel goes to the left, but all the other shadows seem to point to the right...)

Nice shininess on the gunblade. Nice presence to the character--has a pretty good sense of weight.

...

Hope that helps! :)
