Susan
Susan by @denise (Denise Chan)

After reading Soul Music (by Terry Pratchett; it's a Discworld novel) I had an awful urge to draw Susan - she's Death's granddaughter and takes over when he goes missing. The idea of a teenage, female Grim Reaper was too good to resist! :D

Technical Details: Painter 7, some minor touchups in Photoshop 6. Approx 2.5 hours. Original dimensions: 1000x1500 pixels. I still can't really draw faces...there's something distinctly odd about her, still...but I'm getting there, slowly (or so I hope).

Edit: Reuploaded. Lips moved, minor touchup to hair done.

I've seen very few draw realistic looking people in all of side7, I am one, too. I'm astounded how you make her facial expression so real, while as mine always turn out crappy. (haha) You've done very well on the highlighting and darkening, though the lips seem a bit out of place. Great work on this!

Thank you for the kind words! :) I don't usually do realistic people so this was a bit of a challenge for me...glad to hear the expression turned out alright. Yep, I had lots of trouble with those lips, I kept reworking them over and over again! Sigh!

I feel I have some good experience and references regarding human faces; I'd be willing to mentor you and point you towards some face drawing resources, if you're interested.

In other news, I like the colors you used here. You've worked a lot of colors into the face that others would be afraid to put there (purple, for instance). Your features, however, seem mushy and soft, like you're not quite understanding the structures, and the expression could be a mite stronger.

Like I said, I'd be happy to do a redline or paintover or anything like that you want--I'm just excited when folks attempt more realistic human faces!
