A possession gone wrong is basically what Runic Demons are. Runic Demons have the ability to possess things but when the first human showed up, let's just say that was one creature they couldn't take over. Many tried only to fail and become horrible disfigured in a half demon half human state. It then became tradition for Runic Demons to tattoo their bodies to help hide the mangled body.
