Ashes
Ashes by @wolf (Courtney Davidson)

"Just as ashes are born of a flame..."

Character development picture that was just crying to be finished ^_^ This is my character Maha as a child. Born of sunlight, she knew only the sound of her name. She was simply found drifting down out of the dawn sky, and with wings and pointy ears and no family or home, the poor girl had some rough times before the Fallen Angels SG took her in. Maha is pretty much an incarnation of Macha/Epona/Brigid, complete with mind-control and sun auras (A Mind-controller/Bubbler for you CoH players ;) As you can imagine, I can't wait for the wings update to come out!)

I'm slowly working out how to incorporate her into my story ^_^

Very nice! I like the lighting you use, especially around the wings. The greyish color tones work well for the piece. =) On another note, I like the description of Maha. She sounds interesting! ^^ Nice job overall!

Hehe, lighting did take a good amount of time to get it "right" ^_^ Here's my biggest discovery I made when coloring this peice: the "satin" layer effect! I'd used it before, but never like this... I had to go through the effort of merging everything down and cutting out the figure entirely to apply the effect over her whole body. Results were well worth it.

Thanks about the description! I left it very abbreviated ^^ Here's the whole quote (said by the person who first tried to care for her): "Just as ashes are born of flame, I beleive this girl of ashen wing and golden halo is born of Brigit, the Everlasting Flame." Little Maha here is the next incarnation of the Sun Goddess Macha... or one of them, anyway ^^ She's like a cross between the Sidhe/Tuatha de Danaan and Angels. Of course, she was "born" knowing only the SOUND of her name, not how it should be spelled... hence she is Maha! It's an excuse for not being able to get the character name "Macha" on the server I joined when I created her in City of Heroes ;)

HI FANTASTIC WORK........PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT TONE YOU USED FOR THE HAIR................SHIRLEY

Posted: Thursday, 28 October, 2004 @ 08:40 AM

The color I used is Photoshop CS's "Darker Warm Brown"... it's a bit lighter and greyer than it would be if I'd applied it full-strength, though. I have that layer with only a 70% fill and 40% opacity. The shading from the original pencil sketch shows through... though there's also a bit of low-fill white in a seperate layer overtop of the brown, smudged around a good bit, to help highlight. So.... it's really quite a mix of colors, lol!

I'm happiest with the hair ^_^ As a random side note, she grows it out as she gets older ;) This pic could be of a little girl OR a boy, lol!

I really like this image... the darkness really gives it a feeling of despair, but the glowing necklace shows hope... I'm not sure how exactly to describe the way this image makes me feel, but it does make me feel, which is what all great art should do, anyways... ne?
