Thalassander Developement
Thalassander Developement by @Agape (LNE R)

I was experimenting with a coloring style I wanted to use for my graphic novel/comic book project "Garden"(working title only). I was going for a vibrant cel-shaded style. I included some different shots from the progression of the picture, although this isn't intended to be a tutorial or anything like that. The very end is where I played around with textures and the BG... I'm going to try very hard to make the backgrounds in my comic better than the one pictured here, since I know its rather underwhelming. I only use brushes and textures that I know are free to use in commercial art, to avoid any problems in the future if I ever sell this comic book. If you would like some textures and brushed of your own I would recommend googling "photoshop brushes", there is a lot of great stuff people are giving away for free.

The creature depicted here is a Thalassander, or Thalassan for short. They are one of four human-like races on the planet where the comic book takes place. Thalassans are an aquatic people with wing-like appendages that are used as fins for propulsion in water and tails that are like those of fish and aquatic mammals. They also have digitigrade webbed feet, sort of akin to a frog and a dinosaur. They also can have various other smaller fins beneath their main pair and on their tails. Thalassans cannot use their "wings" to fly, since they are like paddles or fins, and Thalassan's are too heavy.

Basically, they are fish men. They aren't anthropomorphic animals, they are quite a bit more like humans with some animal adaptations and characteristics. Their faces are variable, but they are always more human-like than animalistic, as with anthropomorphic animals. Thalassanders can come in any color, and have any kind of skin pattern. They can also be scaled, and have a variety of different fin types that mimic the fin types seen in the creatures of our ocean, and their ocean too. Thalassan's have gils on the lower half of their necks, and have longer and thicker necks than humans do.

This is sort of the "beta" Thalassander, there will still be some slight adjustments made to their design, such as getting rid of the fins on their shoulders, but overall the final version will be similar.

Very interesting creature design and nicely drawn and shaded. The shading in the last two examples really pops. I love the detail in its body shape and markings. Nicely done. I hope you will share the link to the comic when it's going.
