In my experience, charcoal doesn't like to be colored; it mixes in with whatever you're coloring with and makes it very muddy. Better to try shading it.

(However, charcoal on canvas works as an underdrawing for a painting OK.)

If you want to color things with that neat dusty feel that charcoal has, you might want to invest in a small set of chalk pastels (not oils).
