He was born while his parents were running away from their home village in Uzushiogakure during it's destruction. His mother died when he was young, but he continued traveling from place to place with his father who provided what little he could. Eventually, they settled in Suna while Shun was young, and while Shun couldn't enter the academy due to being a foreigner, his dad taught him basic ninja skills as well as their clans signature fuinjutsu with the scrolls they'd saved and collected over their long journey. 

During his time in Suna, the fourth Kazekage kept tabs on Shun and his father. He offers to take in Shun and train him personally, seeing as his Uzumaki heritage could be a great military asset.

Being from the Uzumaki clan, he is a distant cousin to Naruto, Nagato and Karin.
