We know of the advance expedition, and in Part II we get an idea of what happened to it, but we never learn exactly how the squad dies. But if there's supposedly enough blood that the sandworms would drown in it (worms suffer a toxic reaction to water), it can't have been pretty.

Corporal Reitan was originally designed for just this scene, but he soon enough got caught up in the Combine assault, in which he serves as a cryptic cypher to elaborate on what Toyoda hasn't told the heroes. He's obviously insane; but does that mean we should discount everything he says?
