The tragedy of the Good Soldier; much like Siegfried Sassoon, the only reason he's still in the fight is to do his best to mitigate the damage, since he knows Hickten won't. Given how pretty much all of CG's villain factions are mindless zealots headed by rabid ideologues, it really is a testament to Schäffer's skill that he still has a job.
