Explorers by @Thorvald (El Thorvaldo)
Statue commemorating the discovery of New Zealand by fabled Polynesian explorer Kupe, accompanied by his wife, here named Hine Te Aparangi, and Tohunga (roughly translatable as 'expert practitioner') Pekahourangi. Naturally, Hine has no shirt.
Dedicated "as a tribute to all who have come to these shores", the monument was originally sculpted by William Trethewey ca. 1940 in plaster of Paris for the Centennial Exhibition, and was recast in bronze in 1999. It was relocated to the Wellington Waterfront in 2000 after previous housings at the railway station, Sports Centre, and Te Papa.
