Fighting men of Glannark by @The-Wizard-of-Zaar (The Wizard Of Zaar)
Four examples of uniform troop types in the nation of Glannark, four of definitely what are the more elite examples.
From left to right;
A Grey Guardsman of the Mounds; the Mounds are a rocky, cold and grim region in the far West of Glannark. It is a place full of clans of bandits, tribes of goblins and the odd, dreaded ogre.
Life in the mounds is harsh and violent, as are it's people the "Mounders", a people belonging to one of two ethnic groups- The native Glannish, and the Ruaic, those decended from savage raiders from the uncivilized island nation of Ruan whom have colonized Western Glannark discreetly for generations.
Unlike other regions and fiefdoms of Glannark; the Mounds are very strongly united and their noble families do not compete for dominance of the Mounds; but have banded together to maintain safety, law and prosperity in the Mounds. Thus they have established a professional army they all hold command of; the Grey Guard.
Grey Guard are skilled and ferocious fighting men whom are trained in the ancient dagger fighting and pugilistic arts of their Ruaic forefathers. They are seasoned men of violence, hardened and made agile by fighting and traversing the rocky terrain of the Mounds. They protect the Mounds and it's people from those threats from within and without, as they fight off invaders, bandits and strange inhuman forces that plague the Mounds. They are also the law keepers of the Mounds; guarding towns, villages and roads.
However there is a thuggish and murderous element to the Grey Guard; sometimes they can be just as criminal as the bandits they battle with.
After serving several years of distinction within the Grey Guard, a Guardsman often may be granted licence to sell sword.
Next to him is a Scout of Lumbria.
Lumbria is the second modt Northern Region of Glannark, Southern only to the Falks.
It is a land of dense, wild and seemingly endless woods. The woods of Lumbria are dangerous, home to packs of wolves, ferocious wild boars, gangs of robbers and things more mysterious.
Lumbrian Scouts are recruited from seasoned woodsmen, further trained in the finer points of archery and stealth. They are the household troops of house Oakley and vicariously are loyal to the Lord Protector of Glannark. Particularly as the people of Lumbria are regarded as some of the most pure and proud of Glannishmen.
Lumbrian Scouts are excellent in reconnaissance, the hunting of men and raiding enemy forces from the cover of woodlands. The Woodlands of Lumbria are their home, and they know all it's sights and sounds, they have bore witness to those things mundane and strange within the woodlands of Lumbria.
Though like these other three varieties of soldier, called upon to serve their duty for the Lord Protector outside of Lumbria, abroad in greater Glannark... They have trouble fitting in other lands of Glannark and clash with outsiders often; particularly as Lumbrians are avid hunters and Scouts of Lumbria unapologetic poachers.
The Watchmen of Lamp Brook are men sworn to House Ilsley, and like their liege lord do not belong to the Glannish, nor Ruaic ethnic groups... But to that of the Savians, mighty and chivalric horsemen of the mainland Eastward across the sea. The Savians conquered Glannark hundreds of years ago and until their defeat and reintegration by the Lord Protector, ruled over all of Glannark as a military aristocracy; forcing those Glannish lords and kings they did not kill into subservience and vassalage. For centuries it had been Savian soldiery, nobility and royalty to rule over Glannark...
Lamp Brook is the only city of it's region (The Tawny Groves), a place of fertile fields, swamp lands and as the name states, a chaotic freckling of many small groves.
The Watchmen of Lamp Brook aren't the hardest or individually most skilled troops of Glannark; but they are organised, well paid and stubbornly loyal to House Ilsley. They are specialists in defending Lamp Brook and it's surrounding towns from sieges and raids; though primarily spearmen, their forces are also schooled in archery, boating, construction and policing.
For like the Grey Guard, they keep law and order in their jurisdiction and patrol even the swamps, often getting about by boat. Roughing up and warding off vagrants, apprehending and arresting theives, and hunting down and slaying the malicious and terrible witches of the swamps and groves.
Though disciplined and dutiful, Watchmen of Lamp Brook often find themselves outmatched quite regularly when far from home; though adept at defending towns, cities and fortresses... They are comparatively soft, pampered and less hardened than many other soldiers or men at arms they meet. They perform poorly in open battles or inland skirmishes; without walls, buildings and streets to defend- They lose heart easily, prone to breaking and fleeing, what they have in training and discipline; they severely lack in savagery, raw fighting skill of many other fighting traditions and are diminished in their valour and horsemanship their Savian ancestors once possessed in plenty.
Few lords of any tribe of Glannark even own horses, let alone can field a band of mounted soldiers or knights.
Lastly, there are what are overall considered the cream of the crop when it comes to professional fighting men in Glannark;
The very soldiers of the Lord Protector of Glannark himself.
Loyal and well organised like the Watchmen, fierce and rigorously drilled like the Grey Guard, and are native men of the land like the Scouts of Lumbria.
They follow a decades long model of soldiery and warfare first established by the Lord Protector himself; for men such as these aided him in his overthrowing of the King, his barons and Savian supremacy over Glannark.
They wear the colours of Glannark, and the symbol of the Lord Protector; an axe - They very tool he used to behead the old King and end the oppression of Glannishmen throughout the realm of Glannark.
Still to this day; only Glannishmen who can prove their native origins may join the Lord Protectors army, no Glannishman is turned away and most past crimes forgiven.
New recruits are trained, the cost of their equipment subsided and are paid a wage. Those skills or experience a recuit had prior are inquired to, evaluated and put to work.
Horses have become fewer and rarer in Glannark; and near all of them now belong to the Lord Protector himself. Few lords were allowed to keep their steeds, and fewer licensed to have them. Though the Lord Protector allows those licenced to own, permitted to breed, sell and gift horses... Monopoly of horses are now his and vicariously that of his army.
The Lord Protector watches whos licenced closely, and punishes those unlicensed found with steeds harshly.
The Lord Protectors forces are a standing, professional army in service to him and all of Glannark, whether they are Glannishmen, Savian or of less familiar, dubious heritage- Like those of Ruaic forebears such as Mounders or Boaters.
Or like those in the Falks and the more wild places in Southern Glannark; where the peoples are not quite Glannish, but no less native to Glannark.
However his Lord Protectors army is an extension of himself and they are the instrument of his law and justice. His soldiers are often unpopular as they deal out punishment and can exact great cruelty and theft.
Due to the quality their training, equipment and provision, they are few in peace time. In times of strife many new recruits are taken on, but are often less well trained, more modestly equipped and often young. Mixed in with groups of regulars and veterans, they are spread wide and thin.
As these days, a single dispute or conflict with the Lord Protector, can spark more insurrection.
His soldiers both in times of peace and strife, are still relegated for tax collections and securing the realm of Kembria.
The care and depth of your world building is well reflected in each of these soldiers. Each as unique as the region they serve or defend. If this were an RPG or strategy game, I would absolutely play it. Your art style is really cool & eye catching as well! Keep up the great work, Wiz!
