Sigebeald of Wyrtgeorn Character Reference
A necromancer living in self-imposed seclusion in County Ostugland of the Raevyllke in the IOT spin-off Intrigue of Magic. Due to the historical link between necromancy and the necrite parasite that forms ghouls' "sibling species" in the Kingdom of Formont, practitioners are regarded as pariahs, and the Crown deigns to harbour Sigebeald as a form of house arrest: keeping him out of rivals' hands while watching over his activities. He actually prefers the solitude, and is frustrated that even his sympathetic neighbours don't leave him alone.
Sigebeald in fact belongs to the Acolytes of Ahuramazda, a mystical sect denounced as heretical by "mainstream" necromancy for its aspirations to venture beyond physical reanimation and discover whether the soul itself can be restored. The Queen believes this defiance of the traditional "death magic" ethos makes him a potentially vital asset: following revelations that the ghoulish infestation in the realm's northwest frontier was orchestrated by the Lich King of Baase, she summons Sigebeald with an offer of official royal patronage in the start of what was intended to be my roleplay long arc to develop an immunity to both the ghoulish virus (which directly competes with varreven lycanthropy, causing violent death when the bloods mix), and the necrite parasite, which can actually corrupt the species.
- The name Sigebeald is Anglo-Saxon (translating as "victory bold") and reflects a motif used throughout the Raevyllke in which human linguistics draw on Old English, while the varreven are a grab-bag of Old Norse and contemporary Scandinavian.
- I do not recall if "Wyrtgeorn" was created with conscious intent or was concocted off the cuff, but it is actually valid Old English, translating as "[plant/root/spice] eager".
Syfrida Solvpals
Sovereign. She recruits him for a project seeking to develop an immunity against the vampiric races, and promises Crown patronage if he can develop a viable plan.
Ranvild Langhogtann
VIceroy to the Crown. Ranvild distrusts necromancy on principle and is opposed to Sigebeald's sponsorship, possibly obfuscating the purpose of his summons specifically to put him on edge.
Prince Herlifur
De jure count of Ostugland, and hence, Sigebeald's direct liege. Dispatches the soldiers that summon him to Haaphavn.
