Replacing the CGI shield was this bizarre package. Inspired by Piet Mondrian's abstract geometric painting, this ident featured an outlined shield, with surrounding pieces lighting up in orange and blue hues.

Like Carlton's idents, this set received mixed reviews - some praised ABC's courage in breaking free from live action footage, while some panned the loss of the identification function.
