The Wizard Of Zaar

Komenim.
Komenim. by @The-Wizard-of-Zaar (The Wizard Of Zaar)

The definition of a Komen traditionally is a fighting man of the Yashan; in particular a man who is skilled with weapons. However always have the Komenim combined the sorcery inherent to their people with their skill at arms. Komen are diverse in the weapons they wield; from spears, javelins and throwing knives, swords, bolas, flails and whips. However magical shackles and the dreaded "Red Crystals' are also tools a Komen may specialize in...

Particularly as the ranks of Komenim for some time have no longer been exclusively fighting men, but also fighting women of the Yashan. The Yashan, like their former Sargari slaves are a commonly tall and deathly pale people. With the addition of their uniformly dyed scarlet hair, scarlet clothing and outlandish tattoos, any Yashani is a bizarre and unsettling figure to behold... But Komenim are often particularly large and imposing.

Yashani youths that are most inclined to trickery, theft and mischief will often engage in harder crimes such as burglary, muggings, loan sharking and the trafficking of people and illegal goods alike. Diving head on into the Yashani stereotypes of being pickpockets, thieves, swindlers, pimps, userers and slavers.

These more lawless and brazen Yashani quickly are set on the path of becoming Komenim.

One common tool used by Komenim are telescopes. Often carried merely out of commitment the Yashani ritual of star gazing (Something deeply spiritual to the Yashan), these telescopes also serve to further their sight and aid them reconnaissance. Yashan typically are educated people; Komen in particular study cartography, geography and navigation. Aiding them in their duties as scouts and spies; much valued intelligence and battle maps of the army of Lykon has been gifted to them by Komenim. A Komen, regardless of gender is expected to be athletic and able to rough it outdoors, away from the typical Yashani lifestyle of luxury and comfort.

Historically Komen were slavers and slave catchers; a tradition still alive and avidly practiced. Many Komen serve to feed the glutinous Yashani appetite for slaves; or hunt down and recapture those who try to escape. The Komenim were once the Yashan people's stern rod and enforcer to Sargari people.

Some argue whilst the Kadar's roots are in that of bandits and assassins; they often rise to the role of the "Anti-Komen" The Komenim are still feared and formidable warriors despite the loss of their image of invincibility.

Komen are reputed for their cruelty, cunning and horrifically callous application of harmful magics such as the green fire of the Yashan people; a spell so malicious- It does not heat steel nor stone; but it will melt through wood, leather and people in seconds, an eerie green and smokeless flame of insane lethality. Komenim are very much free agents; answering to no one but the will of their people. This is very open to interpretation, particularly as not all Yashan agree on what is best for their community. Usually a Komen will pioneer their own enterprise or champion a wealthy and influential patron among their community.

Depending on whom they choose to work for; a Komen's mission could be a tight, well thought out and executed operation. Or a Komen could be a travelling bully and slaver; preying on vulnerable travellers and small, defenceless farmsteads. Some more wild Komenim merely take to the roads in such a manner; in a drug fuelled frenzy of violence, slave taking and destruction. Innocent civilians are regularly victimized by Komenim purely for profit, entertainment and... Because they can, and usually a Komen will get away with it.

Though as much as they enjoy a great deal of impunity within the Kingdom of Lykon... When crossing the border into the Free Republic of the East; they are often faced with bigger fish.

Battalions and garrisons of Free Republic Stratikion protecting the roads, cities and larger towns of the nation. Fierce marauding tribes of Shammarim warriors clashing with whomever tries to oppose them; and of course, the many bands of Kadarim stalking and skulking about unseen. Only the most hardened, fierce and most fearless of Komenim dare invade the territory of the Free Republic. Many who do these days... Never return.

The ever increasing diversity and variations of methodology and skill sets, has made the original definitions of Komenim obsolete. In this modern time, the meaning of Komen is less a man at arms, as it is an adventurer. Fighters, sorcerers, travellers and entrepreneurs that shrug off the safety net of civilization and delve into those places remote, wild and frontier.

One small magical attribute of Yashani people are their deep, black hypnotic eyes; captivating the attention of those who behold them and draining their focus and resolve. Komenim use this ability to pacify, disarm and hypnotize their victims- Whether it is to stay a weak willed enemy combatants blow, or to capture them and capitalize on their targets openness to suggestion to dominate their will. It's considered even more hazardous to try and speak to or negotiate with a Yashan, particularly a Komen... Then it is to outright attack them.
