Why I’m never a fan of two-faced politifreaks online + etc
14 Apr 2024, 05:16 AM

I’ll explain what a politifreak is, a person that lets their political views and bias get the better of them for the absolute worst. Now that I explained what these individuals are, I might as well explain why I downright despise these people. They let their emotions get the better of them, sometimes they defend the worst types of human beings as a “gotcha” alongside many other insufferable flaws, and constantly pushing stupid crap like “Saudi Arabia should stop banning lgbt stuff” or brain dead stuff like that. I also hate the virtue signaling these people do too, and it’s only for political brownie points on Twitter and other sites too, which isn’t shocking tbh. I honestly wished these people didn’t appear on the internet, and I sincerely blame Tumblr and Twitter for creating people like this tbh. I also hate how these people let their Political views blind their morals too, which again, isn’t shocking in the slightest, and don’t get me started on them claiming to put people “accountable” as well, god I hate these people overusing words they don’t understand… They also claim to be progressive one minute, while being regressive another minute when they get told something they don’t like.

That’s enough of my little rant journal, have a nice early morning everyone.

These people are a huge part of my reason for hating social media. Like man, why would I follow art accounts for politics? And why would you follow a fanartist expecting them to post about the current hottest issue and even get mad when they don't? "Being able to not care shows how privileged you are" ma'am, this is an anime fanpage on Instagram.com.

@marven4lyf: Ikr? I just want to see different artwork on instagram, not political stuff that’ll fit in a politics themed website, and this is also why I’m mostly following JP artists on instagram now.

@N0-11: Japanese fandom artists are way more chill. I wish I knew Japanese because they seem much easier to get along with.

@marven4lyf: Indeed, same here tbh.

Depending how much you've poked around my commentary, you may be aware I cut ties with the Imperium Offtopicum group because of political partisanism. The chat community was always left-leaning, but once Trump entered office the culture steadily grew more militant. Part of it was out of legitimate grievance—a remarkably high proportion of regulars was LGBT, especially transgender, and government policies were a direct threat to their lives. But that anger metastasized as ideological dogmatism skewing toward "tankie" politics, tacitly endorsed by the chat leadership. This drove out both the moderates and anarchists over the late 2010s, and in 2021 the community virtually collapsed when the refugees from IOT's sister community Never-Ending Stories stopped running the actual games.

It was tragic to watch people I'd once respected, and even considered friends, devolve into parodies of themselves that treated any deviation from the party line as marking oneself out as a "class enemy"—my departure was prompted by accusations of transphobia that arose from a mishandling of unsigned edits to the community wiki amid a vandalism spree, that chat logs suggest was leveraged for a smear campaign by people I'd fallen out with. The fiasco left me in a state of paranoia for about two weeks; to date, only one person has apologized, and my apology to the aggrieved user remains unacknowledged.

Had chat culture not devolved into the vicious tribalism that it did, I expect the incident would have been resolved amicably, rather than leaping directly to fire-and-forget denouncements. Now, I'm strong in my convictions, and can draw the line between individual people and what they purport to represent; a colleague of mine is not so nuanced, and has seized on incidents like mine to reinforce a victim complex that was already steering him into Alt-Lite sympathies. When I see these people on CFC at large, going off on tangents about Leninist praxis like a chatbot prompt, or taking the worst possible interpretation of an argument in some weird impulse to gatekeep LGBT+ discussions, I can't help thinking they're breeding the very monsters they're so insistent we need to slay.

@Thorvald: I’m sorry you went through that headache of a situation. Most politifreaks are all two faced jerkwads anyways, and will only make the world a worse place imho. I straight up avoid people that post stuff about trans-deaths alongside current day stiff, it’s just off putting how obsessed these weirdos are about claiming to be freedom fighters, while having company logos on their outfit and bag, while claiming they hate corporations, these people should all kick rocks.

@Thorvald: I hate to say it, but Politifreaks make me want to be politically neutral in general, and since the middle ground is murdered by both sides which isn’t helping. (Or becoming right-leaning out of spite, but that won’t help either, but whatever.)

@N0-11: The blow was cushioned somewhat by my expecting I was already in the chat nomenklatura's bad books, but seeing people suddenly surface after months AWOL to join the dogpile was my signal to leave; it certainly laid out who my true friends were. I'd actually been eyeing an exit for some time and only hung on because I was still running a game of my own. I ran the situation through trans friends who were themselves ex-IOTers to advise my response, and they said the affair was an overreaction and I was not acting maliciously. I was then invited to their friend's private art server, where it turned out IOT's reputation was so bad that one person welcomed me with "Don't worry, I heard you're one of the decent people." XD

Or becoming right-leaning out of spite

I swear though, my DYOS colleague has become a walking meme:

"I support TRUE equality, social democracy, and individual dignity!"
"So why do you keep Liking posts that are the remotest bit critical of feminism/racial justice/LGBT+ acceptance?"
"Because the radical leftist gender ideologists keep calling me a reactionary chud!"
"What? Since when?"
"...When I started parroting Alt-Right talking points..."
