In light of later revelations concerning Schäffer's acquaintance with Krieger, it's astounding to think he was created completely off the top of my head without any real predetermined purpose. His inspiration was twofold: if the Space Nazis were to stand a chance against the Union, they needed a commander who could actually command, and from what I'd seen thus far, existing generals seemed to win through dumb luck more than anything else. It was also a deliberate attempt on my part to give an otherwise irredeemable faction a sympathetic character.

This is also the first appearance of Ernust Ekkehard, unnamed at the time; his design continued to fluctuate for months.
