Winter Cardinal Lamp Post
Winter Cardinal Lamp Post by @Agondray

Another art class painting!

This one was a little fun to paint. This time, I learned how to use a dabbing technique to get the effects for some aspects of this painting. Let me tell you, that technique really helped out with making this painting look better than how I would’ve painted it otherwise.

The cardinals might be a bit too big, but I think that’s alright. I especially love the snow effects on this piece, which IS a courtesy of the “dab” technique. Overall, I’m really proud of how this one turned out!

Hope you enjoy as well!

By the way, I added a little “Easter Egg” in this painting, like I did with the Snoopy one. Can anyone find it and guess what it references?

There is a concerning lack of muffins and gingerbread men emojis available in 2023. That snow and the pine needles are nicely textured. I see a bit of sponging in the lamp light, too.

@Cynicallia: Hey, you got the reference! YEAH!

The snow was one of my favorite parts to work on once everything else took shape. The pine needles were sort of a last-minute detail, but I’m glad I added them. It wasn’t exactly sponging in the lamp light, but I guess dabbing does give a similar effect. Thank you tons!

@Agondray: Did you let the black paint dry before adding the snow? That's my problem with real paint, I'm so impatient with it 😅 I always want to jump straight to adding the details, and then I ruin my paintings. Literally every single time.

@Cynicallia: In this case, yeah, I let it air dry while working on other parts of the painting. But one trick I learned in the paint classes was to use a hair dryer to speed up the process a bit. Though, you have to be careful not to make it too hot or run it on the paint for too long. Otherwise you would have air bubbles form and may even dry the paint out to the point that it will crack and crumble off the canvas.

@Agondray: Ah, yeah. Smart people tricks. I wonder why I never think of doing that 😅 I do keep a heat gun near my desk, but I don't like using it. Gotta clear away all of the meltables, collectibles, and electronics first.
