Sketchbook N.I.C.O.L.E. by @Agondray

High school sketchbook drawing #21. Also the final one to involve a Sonic character.

Here we have a Sonic character that is NOT from the games, but rather the SATAM/Archie comics continuities. She is essentially an advanced AI that helped the Freedom Fighters and later in the comics develops a personality and feelings of her own. I was first introduced to her through the ‘Stargazing’ mini-story of Archie’s Sonic the Hedgehog #151. It is one of the first two comic books I ever gotten, so it holds a special place in my heart.

Her pose in this drawing is based on the one she made on a variant cover of Sonic Universe #71. I REALLY studied the cover art for this one, as I wanted to get the details just right. Honestly, I think this is the best one I did of the five characters. The proportions, although not completely accurate, are pretty darn close in my opinion. This is definitely one of my favorite high school sketches and I’m still proud of it to this day!

I like a lot of the Sonic characters, but Nicole is a favorite of mine! I just love her!

Archie predicted sentient chatbots before chatbots were even a thing. :O

@Thorvald: I didn’t even think of that. Man, that’s like ‘The Simpsons’ level of prediction there!

Also, thank you very much! I do remember putting a lot of time into it.

Nicole really was one of the coolest designs they came up with, and one of the last good ones before official characters began looking like weird fan characters. Highschool-me would have given you money to teach her how you did that fancy, 3D tech projection effect around Nicole's wrist. I still can't figure that stuff out without building a 3D reference to study 😅

@Cynicallia: Honestly, I like all of Nicole’s official designs! Like the rest of the freedom fighters’ designs in the old Archie Sonicverse, Nicole’s was recognizable and memorable.

I believe what I did to make that effect was a mix of distance illusion and adding shapes where it was necessary. It’s kinda like drawing a rectangular 3D trapezoid on a piece of a paper. You start off with the basic 2D shapes and curves, and then you add in the smaller shapes in the places where they are needed. It may take a bit of practice and simple rough sketching to pull off, but it can made to great effect when done correctly. It doesn’t hurt to have a ruler or look up references as well!

Trust me, it takes some practice! But once you do figure it out, it gets way easier from there! You just got to keep trying!
