Lady with hair
Lady with hair by @ragukokarn

It's getting there. A few problems that I have yet to solve remains.
Still not sure how fibremesh is suppoed to be applied correctly for volumptious super poofy long hair without going through the mesh, but I will figure something out. Supposedly there is a plugin for this to create spline curves instead of actual geometry and then run the simulation (yes, Zbrush does indeed have that) - but I will not give up without a fight. There's got to be a workaround.

I know nothing about modelling fibre threads but I've seen enough preliminary rigs to be somewhat familiar with the development process. Given this is your second? shot at both hair and realistic faces, it's already a large leap forward. :D

create spline curves

@Thorvald:

Ofcourse there is a dozen or so rabbit holes to dive into regarding rendering hair, so I guess I'll add even more to the list of stuff soon. It is already kind of long but whatever 🙃

Yes, this would be my second attempt at a somewhat realistic face sculpt. I pretty much winged it this time aswell but found out how not to make Zbrush angry like last time and made it work better. Thank you!

@Thorvald: sigh

Ok, so I figured I might aswell share what I found after digging. The plugin I am looking for that would be spot on perfect for the job is named Ornatrix. It comes with physics simulation and other sorts of cool things. That is what some well known game studios etc use.

Never heard of it before, but it is - like the kids say: GOAT.

Just a teeny tiny little problem with this. It costs $599 for a single license. There is also a rental license - whatever that means - available for $50/month.

Had it been $50 for a perptual license than it would have been a reasonable enough investment I guess. There's got to be a workaround..

@ragukokarn: Aye, in my experience prices that high mean they're courting companies, not individual users. HAV - John Macarthur

Hey, this is really good. Hair is difficult to render. I think you did a great job at this. I hope you figure out the spline curves method!

@BadKarma: Oh, thank you kindly! The more I try to use the feature the more I realize it is meant more for concepting rather than being part of the final image. But should be possible to "hack" it well enough 🙂

One of my biggest worries about trying 3D modeling, aside from finances and finding a decent program, was worrying about screwing up the hair or fur effects. I heard that they were usually always a pain to work with and get right.

@Agondray: Usually you have to look into specialized plugins and the likes for fur/har. Every modelling package have a basic hair setup that you can use to - in the least - get something going. I took a deep dive into this topic because I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. Xgen is one of those tools that I do not have, but seen some very good results from.
