Japanese man of mystery, introduced as a supporting ally against the Avatars in DYOS X. His subsequent hiring of CivGeneral to recover the "Gem" begins a series of events that carry over into the sequel thread. Ostensibly a businessman, Toyoda operates a private army with global networks that renders him an independent faction; while the Republic of Coruscant considers him a threat due to a perceived sovereigntist agenda, his influence and interests reach far beyond Japan, with choxorn's manhunt in DYOS X.ii revealing connections to major events in DYOS history—not the least Thorvald of Lym's own rise to power. Toyoda's motives and end goals remain inscrutable, but he appears to be at the heart of a longstanding conspiracy surrounding the Gem.

Trivia:
  • Toyoda originated as the comic sidekick to a pair of characters featured in my pre-DYOS cartoon, neither of whom have (yet) featured in DYOS itself. He was actually intended to play a similar role in DYOS, with a reveal of his "true self" brainstormed as early as DYOS 10 while Alyx was still CG's companion. lord_joakim moving his storyline to DYOS 11 cut the climax to the Gem arc adrift, and Toyoda ended up the story's fulcrum instead, entrenching his political and conspiratorial themes.
  • Toyoda's full name has never been disclosed. His surname is sourced from Sakichi Toyoda, the grandfather of the Toyota Motor Company. Ironically, the business aspect was not a deliberate echo even in his initial conception—his filmmaking carries over from the original project, but the "megacorp" largely evolved out of his adaptation for DYOS.
  • Toyoda's early appearances depict him silhouetted with no distinguishing features; his face is first shown in @GenMarshall's Gmod comics, using Administrator Oshikawa from the City 8 fan mod. Only six people involved in DYOS are briefed on his original design; five know the full scope of his character, and of those, only two remain even nominally involved with the project.
  • Toyoda featured in a concept comic alongside Thorvald predating DYOS X that has never been made public.
  • Toyoda hires CivGeneral for €200 billion and 1, directly snubbing Thorvald's bounty.
  • choxorn's "Ask Me Anything" question is virtually verbatim from our writing discussion.

Relationships/Ties:

Thorvald of Lym
Thorvald's bête noire, inspiring (alternatively) fear and hate. Toyoda does not seem to reciprocate the vendetta, and in fact may have facilitated the rise of the Eastern Union.

CivGeneral
In-universe, CG considers him a "kindly old man" and ostensible ally, although that perception has started to shift alongside Coruscant's internal tensions. As a contributor, @GenMarshall loathes Toyoda with every fibre of his being—simply saying his name provokes the same reaction IRL that I do in-comic.

choxorn
Chief detective in the search for Toyoda during Part II, picking up the slack after CG & Co. decide they'd rather battle the Space Nazis.

Rudolph Krieger
Associates in the pre-DYOS project, their connection is revealed in this comic by a Coruscanti intelligence file. Their exact familiarity has yet to be clarified in the story.

Frederick Corrino IV
Collaborator in the Gem conspiracy: Hannibal discovers that Frederick harboured the Gem on Dune at Toyoda's request, and intentionally refrained from crushing the Combine invasion to enable CivGeneral's seizure of the artifact.

Kuraki Tojikawa
Implied intimates, though their exact relationship has not been revealed.

Yasunari Narakane
Unclear; Narakane has apparently known him since his childhood.

Mr. Ichunose
Close associates, but any friendship appears one-way.

R. W. Smeyna
A rival businessman driven to professional ruin over a decade before the events of DYOS.

Ryouichi Sasaki, Ryuu Tōjō, Tsuyoshi Sadao, Junichi Ishikawa, Shuji Tanaka et al.
PMC officers at varying levels of subordination.
