Lieutenant in Mr. Toyoda's mercenary company. Following clues from the Toyoda Papers, choxorn encounters him as the sole guard of a Mongolian supply depot. Tanaka corroborates Toyoda as an eccentric, saying sudden disappearances aren't uncommon, and name-drops Kuraki Tojikawa and Yasunari Narakane as potential leads on his whereabouts. He also reveals the base was used in Genghis Khan's War of Great Pwnage in DYOS VI. Following choxorn's visit, he is accosted by Evil United field agent Void and subjected to enhanced interrogations.

• Tanaka's surname is taken from his character model, part of either the "Get a Life" or "Dystopia" roleplay addons for Garry's Mod. The first name Shuji was my invention for his article on the DYOS Wiki.
• The Wiki gives his nickname "Shelley", a threefold and convoluted reference to Airplane! ("Don't call me Shirley"), Royal Canadian Air Farce ("I'm Colonel Stacey; my friends call me Teresa"), and the author Shelley Tanaka.
• After choxorn introduces himself as a story protagonist, Tanaka declares he will accept anything he says without corroborating evidence, a jab at CivGeneral instantly ingratiating himself to minor characters. While Tanaka's personality suggests he is being ironic, @GenMarshall went on to crib the line completely straight-faced.
• The final sequence of the introductory comic is a subversion of the "Cool Face" meme popularized at the end of DYOS X (and quickly oversaturated); chox would appropriate it for his CivFanatics avatar.
